Lisbon, Portugal
Portugal’s capital Lisbon comes alive with a rich history seen in every nook and cranny of the city. From the resting place of famous explorer Vasco de Gama at Jeronimos Monastery to the impressive turrets of São Jorge Castle dating all the way back to second century B.C.E., Lisbon offers a deep dive into the past to satiate the most curious travelers. While Western Europe’s oldest city boasts an array of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, that does not mean it has remained stuck in the past. On the contrary, the colorful culture and vibrant life that runs throughout the city’s restaurants, shops, and rooftop bars make it buzz with infectious energy. Taking a tuk tuk through its hard-to-reach passages allows you to experience Lisbon as the locals do.

Porto (Leixões), Portugal
Along the Douro River in the north of Portugal lies Porto, the country’s second-largest city. It may be renowned for its port wine – the Ferreira Caves being one such famed cellar and one of the oldest port wine cellars in Portugal – but the city contains so much more for the explorer spirit to discover. Starting in the port of Leixões, your journey takes you to the Dom Luis I bridge, a direct link to Ribeira, Porto’s oldest district. One of Porto’s most significant sites, the Livraria Lello, is filled with historical, architectural, and literary importance, containing a world of books that any bibliophile traveler will find exciting.

La Corunha, Spain
A Coruña is a port city on a promontory in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. It’s known for its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which has sweeping coastal views. In the medieval old town is the arcaded Plaza de María Pita, surrounded by narrow pedestrianized lanes. In this square is the Estatua de María Pita, a statue of a 16th-century woman who warned the town of an invasion by Sir Francis Drake.

Santander, Spain
Santander is the capital city of the Cantabria region on Spain’s north coast. The Palacio de la Magdalena, once the royal summer residence, lies at the mouth of the Bay of Santander on the rocky La Magdalena Peninsula. West, the city center is home to the Catedral de Santander, with its octagonal cupola and Gothic cloister. Nearby, the Paseo de Pereda promenade runs along one side of the Jardines de Pereda gardens.

Port Medoc | Le Verdon-sur-Mer, France
Port Médoc is where red wine is king. Bordered to the east by the Gironde estuary and to the west by the vast pine forest that separates it from the Atlantic Ocean, the soil of Port Médoc is where France’s most coveted grapes are grown. As the gateway to the Bordeaux Wine Route, you can reach the town of Blanquefort to Saint-Vivien-de-Médoc, near the Pointe de Grave, and indulge in samplings of renowned wines along the way. There is also quite a bit of French history to be appreciated here as you witness three of the 12 Fortifications of Vauban.

Le Palais, Belle Isle, France
About a 5.5-hour trip from Paris, Belle-Île has long been the secret summer getaway for Parisians and it’s easy to see why. Its jagged coastline rises out of the Bay of Biscay and has everything experienced travelers could want on an island, from beautiful beaches to a placid pastoral interior. The first landmark you may spot on your entrance to Le Palais, the capital of Belle-Île, is the imposing 17th-century Citadel Vauban. Sunworshippers and beachcombers can find a spot on the sand at Plage des Grands Sables, while surfers may prefer to catch waves at Plage du Donnant on the west side of the island.

At Sea
Spend the day on the high seas pampering yourself at the spa or enjoying some time on deck. Mingle with your fellow explorers and swap stories of your exploits, making plans for new ones together once you get to shore

Honfleur (Paris & Normandy), France
Honfleur is a city in the department of Calvados, in northern France's Normandy region. It's on the estuary where the Seine river meets the English Channel. The Vieux-Bassin (old harbor), lined with 16th- to 18th-century townhouses, has been a subject for artists including Claude Monet and native son Eugène Boudin. Nearby is 15th-century St. Catherine's Church, a vaulted timber structure erected by shipbuilders.

Tower Bridge, London, United Kingdom
London is a fascinating city with storied landmarks, iconic attractions, and countless hidden gems. Photographers often want to head toward central London near the Westminster Bridge. With Big Ben and Westminster Palace on one side and the London Eye on the other side of the river, it’s the best spot for the ultimate picture of the English capital. Among the lesser-known highlights of London is the British Library, where you may see a scribbled page of Beatles songwriting or a Leonardo da Vinci notebook. There are some stunning illuminated scripts and landmark-scientific items too. If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, head to Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens.

St Mary's | Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom
While you might think you’ve landed in the Caribbean, the gorgeous oasis of St. Mary’s is very much in England. The Isles of Scilly enjoy a climate that is among the mildest, warmest, and sunniest in the United Kingdom. And very few ships visit, making it an ideal remote getaway. Among the smattering of islands strung off the tip of Cornwall is the thoroughly enchanting St. Mary’s with a population of almost 1,800 and covering an area of about three-square miles, the largest island of the five and the gateway to the rest of the archipelago. While St. Mary’s is laid back, you’ll find you can still enjoy an active day, whether you rent a boat or go paddle boarding.

Ringaskiddy | Cobh (Cork), Ireland
Cobh (pronounced Cove) is a favorite destination among history enthusiasts, especially those who have an interest in the world-famous Titanic. It’s also the gateway to wondrous County Cork, a land filled with rich heritage. A visit to Blarney Castle requires a quick kiss as here is where the famous Blarney Stone is set in the wall. Whiskey lovers can rejoice, as Cork is the site of the Old Jameson Distillery, a beautifully restored and self-contained industrial complex taking you right to the heart of the cherished whiskey making tradition. Near Cork lies the picturesque sailing town of Kinsale with vibrant streetscapes and delicious restaurants.

Foynes, Ireland
Famous for tales of mythical monsters and home to one of Europe’s oldest pubs, at the heart of the Shannon River region lies the fascinating town of Foynes. This city is your gateway to discover the castles, cliffs, and cities of western Ireland. Setting out from town you can make it to the rugged Cliffs of Moher, which rise precipitously 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. You can also experience what local life was like a century ago at a living village at the foot of medieval Bunratty Castle, complete with rural farmhouses, village shops and streets recreated and furnished as they would have appeared at that time.

Galway, Ireland
Ireland’s cultural heart is Galway, or Gaillimh as it’s known in Irish. Situated on the picturesque west coast of the country, you can delight in an array of fascinating experiences set in a breathtaking backdrop. For a different perspective, head underground to Aillwee Cave, with winding passages carved in the limestone from melting water from the Ice Age. On the cultural side, by far the most in-depth overview of all there is to know about the city of tribes can be found at the Galway City Museum. But if you really want to get to know the local life in Galway, make your way to one of its many pubs and grab a pint with the locals.

Killybegs, Ireland
Killybegs is one of six historic towns in the Donegal region, home to wild landscapes, white sandy beaches, and cozy little pubs. It’s a city that also takes deep pride in its fishing, tapestries, and carpet craft heritage. For an in-depth experience, visit the Killybegs Maritime and Heritage Center, situated at the famous Donegal carpets building, where world famous hand-knotted carpets are made. You can also revel in its natural wonders, like Bá Fhionntrá (Fintragh Bay), a stunning sheltered beach that stretches only about a mile but holds excellent views of Drumanoo Head, Inishduff Island, and Muckross Head.

Londonderry, United Kingdom
In Londonderry, you can see the walls everywhere you go. Derry, as it’s referred to locally, is the only completely walled city in Ireland and one of the finest in Europe. Almost 20 feet high and at least as wide, the mile-long oval comes complete with gates, watchtowers, battlements, bastions, and huge cannons. The best way to experience this fascinating fortification is to take a walking tour and hear a local guide bring to life the stories of the brutal 17th century sieges. You can top off your day by raising a glass at the Walled City Brewery.

Belfast, Northern Ireland
Anticipate a vibrant restaurant scene, award-winning architecture, and friendly locals as you make your way through the historic city of Belfast. Traipsing the city center calls for a stroll through Belfast’s Botanic Gardens, 28 acres of green lawns and trees near Queens University. Emerge from the gardens at the Ulster Museum, a well-designed space with exhibits on Northern Irish history, art, and natural history. It’s also the gateway to the Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s most famous landmark deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Causeway was formed between 50 and 60 million years ago by an ancient volcanic eruption attracting visitors from far and wide to this corner of north Antrim to come marvel at its majesty and mystery.

Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland
A small town located in County Down, Northern Ireland, Warrenpoint is situated on the northern shores of Carlingford Lough. It’s a gateway to Belfast and Dublin, the capitals of Northern Ireland and Ireland, respectively. Among the lovely sites to enjoy is Narrow Water Castle, located in an idyllic setting overlooking Carlingford Bay. Belfast Castle, built by the Normans in Belfast city center in the late 12th century, sits on a prominent position in Cave Hill Country Park, offering spectacular views out across the lough and the city. South of Warrenpoint, you can venture into Ireland’s capital, Dublin to explore the Georgian architectural elegance, the robust pub culture and some wonderful museums and galleries.

Dublin, Ireland
Ireland’s capital, Dublin, is bustling, cosmopolitan, ancient, and young at heart all at once. It is one of Europe’s liveliest cities, where medieval and 17th-century buildings stand comfortably amid all the trappings of a 21st-century community. Marvels like the incredible Book of Kells, one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world, call out to the curious. A gentle and relaxing cruise along the River Liffey immerses you in the capital’s colorful history, from the first arrival of the Vikings to the rapid development of the city during the 18th and 19th centuries. When in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse, located in the heart of St. James’ Gate Brewery, invites you to raise a glass at the Gravity Bar with a 360-degree view of the city skyline.
