Lisbon, Portugal
Portugal’s capital Lisbon comes alive with a rich history seen in every nook and cranny of the city. From the resting place of famous explorer Vasco de Gama at Jeronimos Monastery to the impressive turrets of São Jorge Castle dating all the way back to second century B.C.E., Lisbon offers a deep dive into the past to satiate the most curious travelers.

While Western Europe’s oldest city boasts an array of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, that does not mean it has remained stuck in the past. On the contrary, the colorful culture and vibrant life that runs throughout the city’s restaurants, shops, and rooftop bars make it buzz with infectious energy. Taking a tuk tuk through its hard-to-reach passages allows you to experience Lisbon as the locals do.

Lagos, Portugal
The city of Lagos, located 45 mi/70 km west of Faro, was founded by Phoenician sailors and was one of the main starting points for Portugal's first explorers. It was also the site of Europe's first slave market, established in 1441. A plaque marks the spot, but virtually no trace of the market remains since Lagos was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1755.

Stop for a couple of hours in this walled city to shop, walk the narrow streets and visit with the people. Have a look at the beautifully decorated baroque church of Santo Antonio. A number of local wineries are open to the public.

Seville, Spain
With the only inland port in Spain – accessible only by small ship – and lying farther from the coastline than other port cities, Seville offers warmer temperatures that create a mild, Mediterranean climate perfect for sunny day explorations. And over 2,000 years of history make it an intriguing destination made for the curious mind.

Once the host grounds of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition World’s Fair, Maria Luisa park now stands as a lush paradise of verdant lawns, palm trees, and pristine ponds. From Lawrence of Arabia to the Star Wars franchise, Plaza de España has played a role in film history throughout the years and through many genres.

Gibraltar, UK
Gibraltar, a British colony is grafted onto a steep, rocky Spanish hillside at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea 310 mi/500 km south of Madrid.

Gibraltar merits at least a half-day's visit. The Rock, which has been British since 1704, is only 2 mi/5 km long, but it has several attractions, among them St. Michael's Cave (outfitted as a hospital during World War II and now an auditorium), the Gibraltar Museum (historical displays from the Stone Age to the present) and a 12th-century Arab castle.

Be sure to read the tombstones at the town graveyard—many of the British sailors killed during the Siege of Gibraltar (1779-83) are buried there.

Also climb or take the cable car to the top of the Rock to see the view from Europa Point. At the halfway station, you'll meet the Barbary apes, Europe's only wild apes. There is also a laser show depicting famous battles for the Rock.

If you tire of Spanish cuisine, stop in a pub and get an order of steak-and-kidney pie or fish-and-chips (the contrast may revive your interest in Spanish food).

Gibraltar is so cramped for space that the airport runway is crossed by a main road—signals stop traffic long enough for airplanes to land.

The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world, in addition to containing notable examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture.

Cartagena, Spain
Cartagena is a historic coastal city on the southern coast of Spain. Founded by Hasdrubal 2,000 years ago in memory of his home city of Carthage in North Africa, it became an even more important city under the Romans, who named it Cartago Nova and made it capital of their province of Carthaginesis. The restored Roman Theater is one of the key sights, along with the 18th-century Arsenal building, which imposingly proclaims its later importance as a naval base. (Incidentally, in a small square in the city center you can also see a model of the world's first submarine, created by Cartagena resident Isaac Peral).

The old heart of Cartagena is pedestrian friendly, though hilly, so take your walking shoes. The TuristBus, which is a double-decker sightseeing bus, departs from near the port entrance. The city is still trying to shake off a dowdy image it's acquired in recent years, and though it certainly looks sprucer and feels a little more trendily atmospheric these days, tourists tend to stay in nearby resort towns such as La Manga, Mazarron and Aguilas and travel to Cartagena for the day to visit the Naval and Maritime Archeology museums, and see the baroque and modernist architecture of many buildings in the old quarter.

Two outstanding fiestas, both declared of National Touristic Interest, are the Holy Week processions and the Romans and Carthaginians parade, a fascinating variant on the ubiquitous Moors and Christians fiestas of neighboring Alicante province.

An nearby offbeat attraction is the Mining Park at La Union (whose paths meander through a starkly arid and austere landscape dotted with derelict mine shafts) that commemorates the town's once thriving mining industry.

Ibiza, Balearics, Spain
The Balearic Island of Ibiza (pronounced ee-BEE-tha) is most strongly associated, these days, with the club and drug culture of the hordes of young visitors who descend there each summer.

The main club scene, including the huge, all-night spots that often have outdoor laser displays, is mostly concentrated in the town of San Antonio and its surroundings. If that's your bag, you'll be in heaven.

If you're not into the club scene, don't be put off—discos are only a part of the local attractions. It is possible to visit Ibiza and go home with memories of a beautiful Mediterranean island with fragrant groves of pine trees, beautiful old whitewashed towns, and fabulous coves and beaches. It is also possible to visit the island and never see or hear the club scene depending upon where you stay. A visit out of season is highly recommended for travelers who want to avoid the worst of the rave crowds.

Palma de Mallorca, Balearics, Spain
Palma is a resort city and capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca (Majorca), in the western Mediterranean. The massive Santa María cathedral, a Gothic landmark begun in the 13th century, overlooks the Bay of Palma. The adjacent Almudaina is a Moorish-style Arab fortress converted to a royal residence. West of the city, hilltop Bellver Castle is a medieval fortress with a distinctive circular shape.

Mahón, or Maó, is the capital of the Spanish island of Menorca. It’s known for its British-style Georgian houses and sheltered harbor. Santa María Church, with an ornate 19th-century organ, sits on central Plaça de la Constitució. Next to the church, the city hall has a Renaissance facade and a clock donated by the island’s first British governor. The Menorca Museum displays art and exhibits on the island's history.

Roses, Spain
Near the Spanish-French border of Spain’s rugged Costa Brava, you’ll find a fair and lovely landscape. Delight in exploring the historic center of Roses, dotted with chic shops and highlighted by modernist architecture. Roses is less than a half-hour drive to Cadaqués. This town attracted world-famous artists. Most notably, the Catalan town was where Surrealist artist Salvador Dalì spent his childhood here and later established his home in Port Lligat. The Dalí House Museum here is also worth a visit. For the ultimate view of Roses, its picturesque bay and its neighboring villages, take to the sky. From nearby Empuriabrava, you can skydive for an unforgettable thrill of a lifetime.

Sete, France
Sete lies at the foot of Mount St. Clair between the Gulf of Thau and the Mediterranean Sea. Hike to the summit to explore the Quartier Haute, once inhabited by Italian fishermen and now home mostly to artists who have opened their ateliers. There you can also peruse the Paul Valery Museum, displaying contemporary artists, including Maurice Sarthou, Albert Marquet, and Henry Matisse, as well as the church Notre-Dame-De-La-Salette, built on the site of an ancient fortress built by Louis XIII. A visit to Sete should include a jaunt to the beach-a heavenly strip of sandy coast that stretches for more than seven miles.

Cassis (Aix-en-Provence)
Cassis is a Mediterranean fishing port in southern France. Overlooked by a centuries-old château, it’s known for pebbly beaches and its calanques, narrow inlets framed by steep, limestone cliffs. The harbor features pastel-colored buildings, sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Local vineyards are known for producing Cassis white wine. Trails run along the huge, rocky Cap Canaille headland for panoramic sea views.

St. Tropez, France
The jewel in the heart of the spectacular Côte d’Azur, Saint-Tropez was a sleepy seaside village with a rich maritime history that achieved celebrity beginning in the 1960s. Explore the hexagon shaped Citadelle that once served as the defender of the gulf. The castle contains a maritime museum, and the grounds provide breathtaking views of the Côte d’Azur. La Musée de l’Annonciade is a real treat for art lovers and located just beyond the Quai de l’Epi pier. St. Raphael, France
Saint-Raphaël is a resort town on the Côte d'Azur, in southeastern France. Numerous beaches line the Mediterranean coast, some in rocky coves like Fournas and Maupas. Named after a WWII Allied landing, Débarquement Beach faces the island Île d'Or. To the west is the landmark Notre Dame de la Victorie Basilica, built from sandstone in the 19th century. Set atop a parking garage, Bonaparte Garden overlooks the bay.

To take it all in, enjoy a jaunt on the Promenade des Anglais along the Mediterranean Sea. The Old Port, located in Vieux Nice (Old Nice), is a colorful and busy place, with various markets.
