Edinburgh, (Leith) Scotland, UK
Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, is dynamic, but small enough to walk almost anywhere. The streets are busy, narrow, and lined with towering buildings once described as, “a dream in masonry” by Edinburgh-born novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Edinburgh Castle has played an important role in the history of Scotland as both a royal residence and a military stronghold. It’s really two cities: Old Town and New Town, where Old Town is the network of medieval streets south of the castle and New Town is everything on the other side. What unites both and all of Scotland is its whisky, part of the true Scottish experience, as is a toast with scotch, of which you can partake in at Leith’s Kaleidoscope Bar and Dining Room on Queen Street.

Dundee, Scotland, UK
Situated on the Tay estuary, Dundee is Scotland’s sunniest city. It has also earned the accolade of being a UNESCO City of Design-the first in the UK to be awarded the honor. Dundee certainly made its mark on the world as an innovation hub. Yet, the star of Dundee’s Discovery Point show is the RRS Discovery, a three-masted beauty of a 1901 vessel that, with Captain Scott at the helm, expanded the frontiers of exploration in Antarctica. Spend some time exploring Mains Castle and Dundee’s particular Mercat Cross. Before leaving Dundee, be sure to ascend the 572-foot peak known as The Law.

Invergordon, (Loch Ness), UK
Welcome to a land where fairy tales spring to life among castles, lakes and heathered fields. Invergordon is your entrée to the Scottish Highlands and the capital of Inverness, a mere 30 minutes south. Not far from here you can enjoy an outing to Loch Ness, the famed Scottish lake hiding a legendary beast beneath its depths. On your explorations, you can take in the rugged mountains and deep blue lochs, perhaps spotting deer in the hills and eagles overhead. The brisk air, foggy mist and verdant peaks add a dash of mysticism unlike anywhere else – this is the land of Shakespeare’s Macbeth after all.

At Sea
Spend the day on the high seas pampering yourself at the spa or enjoying some time on deck. Mingle with your fellow explorers and swap stories of your exploits, making plans for new ones together once you get to shore

Belfast, Northern Ireland
Anticipate a vibrant restaurant scene, award-winning architecture, and friendly locals as you make your way through the historic city of Belfast. Traipsing the city center calls for a stroll through Belfast’s Botanic Gardens, 28 acres of green lawns and trees near Queens University. Emerge from the gardens at the Ulster Museum, a well-designed space with exhibits on Northern Irish history, art, and natural history. It’s also the gateway to the Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s most famous landmark deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Causeway was formed between 50 and 60 million years ago by an ancient volcanic eruption attracting visitors from far and wide to this corner of north Antrim to come marvel at its majesty and mystery.

Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland
The historic west end of Greenock boasts impressive Victorian buildings, in particular the 245-foot Victoria Tower which remains incomplete. From there, journey to Glasgow to view the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum for a glimpse of its world-class art collection. Toast to the world’s friendliest city with a Tennent’s lager at the historic Wellpark Brewery, where you can learn about the brand’s 450-year history and its passion for Scottish football. From Glasgow, discover the beauty of the Scottish countryside on a journey toward magnificent Stirling Castle, the home of the Stuart kings and birthplace of James II.

Douglas, Isle of Man, UK
Between Ireland and Great Britain in the Irish Sea, there’s a small dot of land called the Isle of Man. Douglas is the capital and your gateway to the incredible treasures that this lesser-known Crown Dependency holds. Not only is Isle of Man culturally and historically different from its surrounding islands, but also linguistically diverse, among the many languages Manx, a Gaelic language similar to some types of Irish Gaelic, but unique to the island. Douglas’ lovely seafront can be traversed by horse-drawn trams, but if you prefer speed, this town also delivers with winding roads made for a thrilling motorcycle adventure. After all, this is the home of the International Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) Race.

Liverpool, UK
Liverpool lies on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary and has a long maritime heritage since its founding in 1207. Putting a fine point on the city’s romance with the harbor is the preservation work at Albert Dock, famous as a buzzing district in itself. Further along toward the Pier Head are the Three Grace buildings, part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of course, when in Liverpool you must walk in the footsteps of The Beatles. See where the Fab Four worked before becoming famous, drive down the famed Penny Lane and pass Strawberry Fields, where John Lennon attended garden parties as a child.

Dublin, Ireland (Dun Laoghaire)
Ireland’s capital, Dublin, is bustling, cosmopolitan, ancient, and young at heart all at once. It is one of Europe’s liveliest cities, where medieval and 17th-century buildings stand comfortably amid all the trappings of a 21st-century community. Marvels like the incredible Book of Kells, one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world, call out to the curious. A gentle and relaxing cruise along the River Liffey immerses you in the capital’s colorful history, from the first arrival of the Vikings to the rapid development of the city during the 18th and 19th centuries. When in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse, located in the heart of St. James’ Gate Brewery, invites you to raise a glass at the Gravity Bar with a 360-degree view of the city skyline.

St Mary's Isles of Scilly, UK
While you might think you’ve landed in the Caribbean, the gorgeous oasis of St. Mary’s is very much in England. The Isles of Scilly enjoy a climate that is among the mildest, warmest, and sunniest in the United Kingdom. And very few ships visit, making it an ideal remote getaway. Among the smattering of islands strung off the tip of Cornwall is the thoroughly enchanting St. Mary’s with a population of almost 1,800 and covering an area of about three-square miles, the largest island of the five and the gateway to the rest of the archipelago. While St. Mary’s is laid back, you’ll find you can still enjoy an active day, whether you rent a boat or go paddle boarding

Ouessant, France
Off the westernmost tip of France, Ouessant is a rugged island with extraordinary rock formations. As such, there is no shortage of lighthouses, with two on land and three at sea, in addition to Phares et Balises, the museum of lighthouses and buoys. The oldest lighthouse, Le Stiff, was built in 1695 by the great military architect Vauban and overlooks the entire island. From this vantage point, you can take incredible photographs of the waves crashing ashore. Ouessant has a deep religious heritage as evident in its main church, Saint-Pol-Aurélien and smaller chapels that dot the island, like those of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Voyage and Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Espérance.

Le Palais, Belle Isle, France
About a 5.5-hour trip from Paris, Belle-Île has long been the secret summer getaway for Parisians and it’s easy to see why. Its jagged coastline rises out of the Bay of Biscay and has everything experienced travelers could want on an island, from beautiful beaches to a placid pastoral interior. The first landmark you may spot on your entrance to Le Palais, the capital of Belle-Île, is the imposing 17th-century Citadel Vauban. Sunworshippers and beachcombers can find a spot on the sand at Plage des Grands Sables, while surfers may prefer to catch waves at Plage du Donnant on the west side of the island.

Port Medoc/Le Verson-sur-Mer,France
Port Médoc is where red wine is king. Bordered to the east by the Gironde estuary and to the west by the vast pine forest that separates it from the Atlantic Ocean, the soil of Port Médoc is where France’s most coveted grapes are grown. As the gateway to the Bordeaux Wine Route, you can reach the town of Blanquefort to Saint-Vivien-de-Médoc, near the Pointe de Grave, and indulge in samplings of renowned wines along the way. There is also quite a bit of French history to be appreciated here as you witness three of the 12 Fortifications of Vauban.

San Sebastian, La Gomera, Canary Islands
Of the eight phenomenal Canary Islands, La Gomera is the Isla Mágica (the magical island). It has a rugged coastline with small, black-sand beaches and is a paradise for nature lovers. Its wild, mountainous landscape is packed with contrasts, from arid coastal areas to fascinating forests, crammed with vegetation, which is why it was named a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. San Sebastián, the island’s capital, also has a nickname – La Isla Colombina, an homage to Christopher Columbus who spent time there. You can visit Casa de Colón, the house where the Italian explorer spent the night before setting off on his history-changing voyage.

At Sea
Spend the day on the high seas pampering yourself at the spa or enjoying some time on deck. Mingle with your fellow explorers and swap stories of your exploits, making plans for new ones together once you get to shore

La Coruna, Spain
A province of Galicia, La Coruña (also known as A Coruña) holds a great deal of history that attracts the intellectual traveler. Home of the Spanish Armada and second-biggest port town in the country, it’s a city that invites explorer spirts to rediscover all its lost secrets and hidden gems. About an hour away lies Santiago de Compostela, a beautiful cathedral to which many make a pilgrimage spanning 500 miles across the top of Spain. If you seek the beauty of nature within the splendor of historic architecture, La Coruña offers the Garden of San Carlos and the Gardens of Mendez Nuñez with verdant patches of bushes and palm trees sprinkled throughout paved paths amid cultural landmarks.

Porto (Leixoes) Portugal
Along the Douro River in the north of Portugal lies Porto, the country’s second-largest city. It may be renowned for its port wine – the Ferreira Caves being one such famed cellar and one of the oldest port wine cellars in Portugal – but the city contains so much more for the explorer spirit to discover. Starting in the port of Leixões, your journey takes you to the Dom Luis I bridge, a direct link to Ribeira, Porto’s oldest district. One of Porto’s most significant sites, the Livraria Lello, is filled with historical, architectural, and literary importance, containing a world of books that any bibliophile traveler will find exciting.

Cascais, Portugal
The town of Cascais gained a reputation as a seaside resort since the days of King Luis I of Portugal. Sample local delicacies like santiaguiños, small slipper lobsters found only in this region. Search for more food adventures in the Mercado da Vila Cascais FoodLab, where you can enjoy wine tastings along with Portuguese cheese, bread, honey and jams for the most mouthwatering charcuterie experience. Slow things down at Parque Marechal Carmona, a peaceful respite from the more-visited areas of Cascais. Find your way to Boca do Inferno (translating to Mouth of Hell). But don’t let the name scare you; it’s actually more like a slice of heaven..

Lisbon, Portugal
Portugal’s capital Lisbon comes alive with a rich history seen in every nook and cranny of the city. From the resting place of famous explorer Vasco de Gama at Jeronimos Monastery to the impressive turrets of São Jorge Castle dating all the way back to second century B.C.E., Lisbon offers a deep dive into the past to satiate the most curious travelers. While Western Europe’s oldest city boasts an array of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, that does not mean it has remained stuck in the past. On the contrary, the colorful culture and vibrant life that runs throughout the city’s restaurants, shops, and rooftop bars make it buzz with infectious energy. Taking a tuk tuk through its hard-to-reach passages allows you to experience Lisbon as the locals do.
