Alaska is so much more than its legends and myths. Boasting lively farmer’s markets, modern art galleries, and fine dining, 21st-century Alaska blends the old and the new, and urban life with the great outdoors in towns and cities surrounded by wilderness. Journey through the wild terrain of Alaska with Celebrity Alaska cruises and discover the natural wonders that await as the rugged beauty of this pristine frontier unfolds. Set out on an unforgettable adventure where you’ll get up close and personal with 30-ton whales, zip-line through the rainforest with a visit to Mendenhall Glacier afterwards, or take flight high above the snow-capped lands and glaciers..
For drama and beauty, few places in the world match the breathtaking splendor of Alaska. For one, there are glaciers—100,000—some bigger than states. Alaska’s wild coastal plains, towering snow-capped mountains, and glacier-rimmed fjords have a way of making you feel worlds away from home.
Ample land and pristine environmental conditions make Alaska well known for its abundant wildlife. While on an Alaska cruise or Cruisetour, make sure to try and spot the “Big 5” of Alaskan land mammals – bear, moose (the state animal), caribou, wolf, and Dall sheep. You’ll see plentiful bald eagles, colorful puffins, humpback whales, orcas, and reindeer in their natural habitat, as well, so make sure you bring a pair of binoculars and a good camera.
Well before it became our 49th state in 1959, the region belonged to Russia. A deal was made by U.S. Secretary of State, William Seward, in 1867 for $7.2 million, or about two cents an acre. People called it Seward’s Folly because they thought the land was useless. Little did they know that in 1880 gold would be discovered in Juneau and in 1902 oil would be discovered and mined in Cordova.

Icy Strait Point
Owned by Alaska Natives, Icy Strait Point offers hiking, whale watching, and a glimpse into the Tlingit people’s culture. The world’s largest and highest ZipRider is here, running 5,495 feet with a 1,300-foot drop and top speed of 65 mph. Another focal point — the fully-restored salmon cannery, originally built in 1912.
Juneau
Take Mt. Roberts Tram up to hike through a rainforest (Juneau has more hiking trails than roads), go glacier trekking on Mendenhall Glacier in the Juneau ice field, whale watching in Auke Bay, helicopter up the glacier for dog sledding, or just explore Alaska’s second largest city.
Hubbard Glacier
Named after Gardiner Hubbard, the founder of National Geographic, Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in the world (76 miles long and as tall as a 30-story building). Calving occurs on a daily basis here, so you’ll get to watch and hear as massive chunks of ice fall from the glacier.
Denali National Park
Denali National Park encompasses 6 million acres with the 20,310-ft.-high Denali (formally known as Mount McKinley), North America’s tallest peak, at the center. With terrain of tundra, spruce forest and glaciers, the park is home to wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall sheep. It’s a great place to see Alaska’s Big 5. You can visit on a pre- or post-Cruisetour from your sailing on Millennium.
There are so many ways to explore your ports of call on an Alaska cruise. Whether you’re an outdoorsy, active type or a foodie out to explore local cuisine and craft beers, Celebrity has an Alaska shore excursion geared to your interests.
Experience something the whole family will enjoy in this incredible part of the world. Go dog sledding on a glacier and learn all about all the planning that goes into the Iditarod race, ride a 4 x 4 through the forest, hike through a rainforest (yes, they exist in Alaska), kayak past majestic mountains, even take a seaplane to view the fjords and Alaska from above.
From whale watching, to moose searching to cruising through a peninsula teeming with marine life, there are plenty of options to see and learn more about Alaska’s wild side. Looking for something more hands on? Try your luck at fishing for the local catch—halibut or salmon.
Learn more about the native people and their traditions that have been handed down throughout the years. Experience the excitement of the gold rush and the life of those who fled to Alaska trying to strike gold. Learn about the life of a lumberjack. Or just learn more about what life was like for the natives and early settlers.
