This luxe-adventure journey from the Caribbean into South America brings you to the renowned Spice Island, Grenada, a destination filled with color, culture, and a rich history, all wrapped up in a tropical splendor. You’ll also find your way to Cartagena, Colombia, a UNESCO-designated city rife with fortified architecture and monuments that keep its vibrant history alive.

Porto (Leixoes) Portugal
Along the Douro River in the north of Portugal lies Porto, the country’s second-largest city. It may be renowned for its port wine – the Ferreira Caves being one such famed cellar and one of the oldest port wine cellars in Portugal – but the city contains so much more for the explorer spirit to discover. Starting in the port of Leixões, your journey takes you to the Dom Luis I bridge, a direct link to Ribeira, Porto’s oldest district. One of Porto’s most significant sites, the Livraria Lello, is filled with historical, architectural, and literary importance, containing a world of books that any bibliophile traveler will find exciting.

Lisbon, Portugal
Portugal’s capital Lisbon comes alive with a rich history seen in every nook and cranny of the city. From the resting place of famous explorer Vasco de Gama at Jeronimos Monastery to the impressive turrets of São Jorge Castle dating all the way back to second century B.C.E., Lisbon offers a deep dive into the past to satiate the most curious travelers. While Western Europe’s oldest city boasts an array of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, that does not mean it has remained stuck in the past. On the contrary, the colorful culture and vibrant life that runs throughout the city’s restaurants, shops, and rooftop bars make it buzz with infectious energy. Taking a tuk tuk through its hard-to-reach passages allows you to experience Lisbon as the locals do.

At Sea
Spend the day on the high seas pampering yourself at the spa or enjoying some time on deck. Mingle with your fellow explorers and swap stories of your exploits, making plans for new ones together once you get to shore

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
The lava-formed landscapes of the island of Madeira call out to explorers to discover its lush scenery and rugged coastlines. The island’s capital and biggest town, Funchal, offers invigorating adventures like an elevated cable car ride ascending the green slopes up to Monte for incredible sky-high views. As you rise to the top you see a sprawling, lively city and at the end of the ride, the Madeira Botanical Gardens await with enchanting flora. You can find your way back down with a wooden toboggan ride. For the full Madeira experience, visit the Old Blandy Wine Lodge, a winery that has been in business for over 200 years.

Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands
Formed off the coast of Morocco, the volcanic Canary Islands offer rugged and captivating landscapes with black and white sand beaches. The port city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a rich combination of historical architecture and modern design, leads the way to exploration of the islands, sometimes referred to as the Canaries. Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, lies off the northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. A walk along the Santa Cruz promenade comes with views of lush green flora and rocky mountain peaks against blue sky. Playa Jardin offers spectacular views of black sand dotted with verdant palm trees and the deep blue waters of the Atlantic lapping against the shore, creating a vibrant picture of paradise. Mount Teide, the highest point of elevation in Spain, offers breathtaking views with a short cable car ride up near its summit. The active volcano offers fertile grounds that are home to over 150 plant species, making it a colorful landscape you will not want to miss. Its walking paths give you the chance to challenge your muscles to the ultimate hike. The cuisine of the Canary Islands is a rich and savory mix of Spanish, African, and Latin-American foods. Even one of its staple foods, bananas, originated in Asia. This cultural combination of foods makes eating in the Canaries an adventure of its own. With flavors of fish, rice, meat, and locally grown fruits and vegetables, your taste buds will never be bored.

Pitons Bay | Castries, Saint Lucia
While Saint Lucia on its own is a stunning destination, its crowning jewel is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pitons. These mountain peaks are such an iconic sight, you can easily pick them out from any array of photos. Aboard a small ship, you can get closer to the Pitons Bay. As the day comes to an end and the sunlight begins to dwindle, you’re treated to a marvelous view. There are few sights that evoke the same feeling of watching the sun dip low between the Piton Mountain peaks and disappear into the horizon.

Known as the emerald jewel of the Caribbean for its mountainous and lush landscape, the island nation of St. Lucia provides an enchanting backdrop for a perfect tropical expedition. As you enter Castries, not far from the port lies a vibrant and bustling market where local vendors sell their produce and colorful crafts. A quick water taxi ride from Rodney Bay to Marigot Bay takes you to an enticing, secret getaway. Among its most visited sites are the Sulphur Springs, part of the Qualibou caldera, located within St. Lucia’s famed volcanic peaks, the Pitons (also a World UNESCO Heritage Site). The true magic happens as you watch the sun go down between the peaks of the Piton Mountains, as you understand why this tiny Caribbean island is such a gem.

Bridgetown, Barbados
The historic capital of Barbados, Bridgetown, contains centuries of colonial architecture that display the spread of the British Empire. The Barbados Garrison, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of many old buildings filled with the fascinating history of how the island grew into what it is today. Lying along the southwest coast of Carlisle Bay, it also offers beautiful and serene beach scenes with soft, white sand. And it’s an enticing destination with ancient shipwrecks to dive and explore near the coast, like the S.S. Stavronikita, one of the most popular dive sites in the entire Caribbean. A trip to Barbados is not complete without a sampling of the local rum at St. Nicholas Abbey, one of the oldest distilleries in the Caribbean.

St. Georges, Grenada
From the moment you arrive on this storied island nation, you will be enchanted by its beautiful beaches and colorful architecture. You’ll also be taken aback by the ever-present aroma of nutmeg, vanilla, and cloves – after all, this is the Spice Isle. To get a true taste of life in Grenada, spend some time in Market Square where fruits, vegetables and, most importantly, spices, change hands. A relaxing experience awaits on one of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean, Grand Anse. Meanwhile, the Grand Etang National Park offers hikers and explorers a glimpse of the cobalt blue lake in the crater of an extinct volcano.

At Sea
Spend the day on the high seas pampering yourself at the spa or enjoying some time on deck. Mingle with your fellow explorers and swap stories of your exploits, making plans for new ones together once you get to shore

Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles
Bonaire, the Dutch Caribbean island just off the coast of Venezuela, is famous for its laid-back environment, sustainability efforts, and world-renowned scuba diving. It remains as a special entity of the Netherlands where Dutch is widely spoken, along with English and the local dialect of Papiamentu. Bonaire’s capital, Kralendijk, is a lively and colorful Caribbean town center. You can stroll the streets enjoying the Caribbean architecture while shopping in the main street Kaya Grandi and the area around it. For an exhilarating hike, take the Subí Brandaris Trail to the highest point on the island. The view from the top is a really fantastic reward and on a clear day you can see the island of Curaçao and beyond.

Willemstad, Curacao
The iconic narrow alleys and colorful Dutch-style buildings of Willemstad’s Otrobanda invite you to enjoy a leisurely stroll. Crossing the Sint Annabaai Channel to get to the Punda side of town, your promenade continues over the Queen Emma Bridge, known locally as “The Swinging Old Lady.” This floating pontoon bridge is one of the town’s most recognizable features, dating back to the late 1800s. In no time you arrive at Fort Amsterdam. Built in 1735, this fort has fended off threats by England, France, Spain, Germany, and Venezuela, and has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Barranquilla, Colombia
Barranquilla is home to one of the greatest carnivals (if not the greatest), so much so that UNESCO has deemed the four-day party an essential part of humanity’s oral and intangible heritage. Yet, this South American city is a delight year-round. Surfers rejoice! Barranquilla is home to some of the best surf breaks in Colombia. If surfing is too conventional, travel from the small neighborhood of Las Flores aboard a quaking train toward the point where the river meets the sea. If you are a literary buff, you will be pleased to know that this was the stomping ground of the great Gabo, Gabriel García Márquez.

Barranquilla | Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena has it all: sandy beaches, mouth-watering cuisine, a vibrant culture, not to mention exquisite architecture that you can immerse yourself in. In 1984, the walled city of Cartagena was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through beautiful colonial streets adorned with breathtaking balconies overflowing with flowers. The brightly hued houses and intricately decorated doors invite you to bring out your inner photographer. Wherever you go in this historic Old Town, capture picture-perfect contrasts set against azure sky. Walk to the San Felipe Fortress and appreciate the colonial architecture of Saint Peter Claver Church and Cloister. The Inquisition Palace remains as one of the finest buildings, but as the name suggests has a notoriously bloody past

San Blas Islands, Panama
In Panama, the San Blas archipelago of islands dot the Caribbean Sea. This group of pristine atolls, more than 365 of them, are inhabited by the native Guna (or Kuna) tribe. They are a small, but proud fishing community that mostly live in small straw and wood huts. The water in the archipelago is surprisingly deep between the islands, but the reefs surrounding each island make for excellent snorkeling. Plan to island hop between El Porvenir for shopping and Isla Perro for amazing snorkeling.

Colon, Panama
Colón is the gateway to the Panama Canal. You can learn all about this engineering feat at the Agua Clara Locks Visitor Center and watch this engineering wonder in action from the observation decks over the Canal’s extension and Gatun Lake. From here you can journey to the picturesque Spanish Colonial town and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Portobelo. Near Colón, you can immerse yourself in Spain’s influence as you explore the 16th-century Fort San Lorenzo. This fortress was first constructed by the Spanish to guard the entrance to the Rio Chagres, an important waterway for trade and slave ships
